After Tesla’s recent exposure involving the death of two drivers on April 17, 2021, who were beta testing the “full self-driving software”, FeaturesFirst Auto is reminding our community of the risks associated with connecting, interacting and engaging with automated technologies without proper guidance.

Full self-driving software, or FSD, is technically a driver-assist system, so American regulators allow beta versions of it to be tested on public roads. There are stiffer restrictions on driver-assist systems in Europe, where Tesla offers a more limited suite of autonomous driving features.

Tesla drivers and all drivers are supposed to remain attentive while driving and riding. The name “full self-driving” can be very misleading to drivers. Terminology is a topic that is often discussed when considering the development of automation and safety features. Lobbyist are currently advocating for the standardization of the naming of safety features to mitigate the risk of drivers misutilization and the inherited risks associated.
Did you know that your voice was requested? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was giving the public an opportunity to comment on its advance notice of proposed rulemaking regarding automated vehicle safety. NHTSA was seeking comments on the manner in which the framework can be administered, specifically consumer information, regulation and guidance.

Are you ready to be a smart driver in this new era of automation?

Here are some tips on how you can improve your safety while driving during this Distracted Driving Awareness Month:

1. Put it away. Place your mobile device out of sight to prevent temptation.
2. Know where you’re going. If using a navigation system, program the destination before driving.
3. Pull over. If you must call or text while on the road, pull off the road safely and stop first.
4. Ask passengers for help. If riding with someone, seek their help to navigate, make a call or send a message.
5. Be a good passenger. Speak out if the driver of your vehicle is distracted.
6. Don’t be a distraction. Avoid calling or texting others when you know they are driving.
7. Activate Do Not Disturb. Setting up this feature on iPhone or Android device will prevent calls from coming in while you’re driving.
